Anyone that grew up in Lawrence in the 70s and the 80s may remember how much the community used Hamnett Park located on Ohio Avenue. I recall the opening day parades for Tom Hamnett Soccer Association where all of the teams (players and coaches) stood in formation and marched down the hill (seemed much bigger back then) and onto the field as parents, siblings, and friends all cheered making us feel very important. Great memories, for sure.
For the past couple of decades, Hamnett Park has been passively used by nearby residents for the small playground closer to the road, leaving the large field open and unused. Hopefully, if all goes well, that will change. We are in the planning stages to design and install a dog park (one area for small dogs and another for larger dogs) and a walking track around the perimeter for pedestrians to use for a combined canine/human recreational experience!
This park is a gem to be reclaimed and re-imagined. With a dog park at Village Park, a dog park at Hamnett Park will provide those in southern Lawrence with a closer option to run and play with their dogs. It will also bring back a park in a way that does not prove disruptive to the nearby homes since dog parks would produce limited, but hopefully consistent, use by our residents from all areas. With plenty of parking, a picnic area, and a playground, we have the makings of something special. Stay tuned for updates!
